How to become a volunteer at Norway Cup
The Norway Cup cannot be organized without great efforts from volunteer members of the organizing club, Bækkelagets Sportsklub.
Do you want to work as a volunteer?
All team managers in BSK will receive information by email the last week before Easter.
If you are not a member of BSK, but still want to work as a volunteer, you can send an email to kaifry@online.no or nc@bsknc.no .
Bækkelagets Sportsklub has gained a special reputation as a super organizer of sports events. The club was founded as early as October 24, 1909. BSK with approximately 2250 members has become world-renowned especially for the organization of the football tournament Norway Cup, which started as early as 1972.
45,000 volunteer hours
What's really special about Norway Cup in terms of volunteering is that the event is held in week 31 every year. It's in the middle of Norwegians' hectic summer vacation time. But every year, more than half of Bækkelagets Sportsklubs' members use their vacation to work on the world's coolest volunteering!
Statistics show that approximately 1,500 of the club's slightly over 2,250 members plus parents/close family of the members volunteer every single year. This amounts to just over 45,000 volunteer hours every single year.
100 people for 25 years
For Bækkelagets Sportsklub, the Norway Cup is of course the most important source of income for the year. Volunteer hours completed form an important basis for calculating the distribution of income between the club's six special sports groups (football, handball, floorball, athletics, orienteering and skiing) and four parent committees.
Among the club's members, there are almost 100 people who have volunteered in the Norway Cup for more than 25 of the 40 years. Among these, there are around 25 people who have volunteered in more than 30 tournaments. A handful can say that they have worked in all 42 Norway Cup tournaments.
Three generations
We also have a dozen families in Bækkelagets Sportsklub who have contributed volunteers through three generations. It is quite natural that parents and children participate at the same time (in the same year) in different functions.
In order for parents with small children to be able to work, a large Norway Cup kindergarten is organized every year where volunteers can place their children. As soon as the children are over 7 years old, they will be able to participate in a specially adapted function called the cleaning and cycling service. It is an extremely popular volunteering opportunity that brings together around 300 children.
4,000 volunteer hours at schools
Norway Cup is the children's first training in volunteer work. It is therefore important that the start is experienced positively. Since almost 500 members have volunteered in at least 10 tournaments, many have experienced this type of boost for the club community as fun and meaningful.
In order for the volunteer overview to be complete, it must also be mentioned that all work at the schools where participants stay overnight is carried out by other voluntary organizations by agreement with Norway Cup.
Hotels and schools are used for accommodation. At each school, it is estimated that there are eight to ten volunteers who share the guard duty throughout the day. In total, these guard crews will put in between 3000 – 4000 volunteer hours during the Norway Cup week.
Many big events
Throughout its more than 100-year history, the club has been responsible for many major events such as:
- The boys' Holmenkollrenn, which brought together thousands of jumpers from all over the country for a number of years
- Oslo Cup in handball
- Norwegian Championship (NM)
- The solo races in orienteering
- The series of events is topped off with football's Norway Cup.
- The Bækkelagsrennet
