This museum is located in an old arsenal building, and it’s been there since 1860! The exhibitions shows the history of the Norwegian military defence from the 15th century until today. This was his first expedition to be captured on film, and was later awarded Academy Award for best documentary in 1951.He later completed similar achievements with the reed boats Ra, Ra II and Tigris, through which he championed his deep involvement for both the environment and world peace.He was also responsible for important archeological excavations on the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island and in Túcume (Peru). The Kon-Tiki Museum exhibits objects from Heyerdahl’s world-famous expeditions, the original Kon-Tiki raft, and the papyrus boat Ra II.Underneath the Kon-Tiki raft there is an underwater display with a giant whale-shark, and also replicas of the secret caves of Easter Island. In the main exhibition hall, there is a model of a 10-meter high moai statue from Easter Island, and a display of the reed boat Tigris’ gigantic oar. The ship itself was burned as a protest of arms sales to poor countries, in a plead for peace.The museum is located at Bygdøy just outside Oslo centrum. The museum has 155 building where most of them are from the 12th century, and the newest from 2002. Most of the buildings have been moved from different parts of Norway and have been rebuild at the museum. One part of the museum shows the countryside villages, while the other part shows the city. Homemade soft potato bread and a trip to the old store where you can buy old-fashioned candy is very popular amongst the kids!
